Why I Decided to Take a Year to Travel the World
One of my goals with this blog is to not only be able to share my own adventures, but to inspire others to do the same. To bring some inspiration, I thought it might be nice to tell why I decided to take a year to travel the world. Trust me if I can do it, you can too.
Before Deciding to Take a Year to Travel the World
I could stay at my job as a marketing coordinator for one of the best digital marketing agencies in the city. In fact, I love working there, and am extremely sad about my last day this coming Friday. However, I had to look at the bigger picture. Where did I see my life going? Where did I want to see my life go?
Seeing where your life going is not an easy task. I think everyone reaches a point in their life when they get so frustrated and confused about what they want to do that it becomes overwhelming. I always knew I didn’t want to work a 9-5 job for the rest of my life, I knew I wanted to be my own boss and be able to have the freedom to live my life the way I chose. But I still never knew what I wanted to start, or how I could do that. Up until recently.
Realizing My Dreams
Over the past year it’s become so clear to me where my passion lies, and how it can help me achieve my dreams. I don’t have to start some widget company that I am not passionate about. No, I can travel the world and use my expertise in digital marketing to grow my blog and connect with like-minded people. It would seriously be my honour to inspire just one person, and if that one person could turn into two, and then 10, 20, 100, 1000, it would make my life and my soul so full.
Yes, there are some things I needed to make this trip happen (like money). Which fortunately I’ve been able to save up over the years. But as long as you have a little nest egg to get you going, the only constraint you have is yourself.
For me, this was the perfect timing as I hadn’t accepted a full-time job yet, I don’t have any rent to pay, and no kids to take care of.
Although those are important obligations, they can be taken care of if this is your true passion. My co-worker is an inspiration, she has a young family and is going travelling next year for 8 months. She’s taking her kids out of school and homeschooling them on the way. So, don’t tell me you can’t do it because of your obligations.
Now, the real reason why I decided to take a year to travel the world? Is because I saw two options.
- Spend my money putting a down payment on a condo and playing it safe working a 9-5 job I knew I loved and was stable
- Spend a year trying to make my dreams come true. Travel the world, connect with like minded people, and inspire others to follow their travel dreams.
To me the option was obvious, but to a lot of others it’s risky and not so obvious. I wouldn’t consider myself a risk taker, but this seemed too big of a risk NOT to take. Why would I want to risk my future dreams?
For those wondering if this is the right decision for them, I say if you are even wondering it in the first place, it absolutely is. The only hard part is mentally preparing yourself to embrace the unknown. To embrace a world where you could be so fulfilled you won’t even know what to do about it.
Comment below if you’ve always wanted to travel – but are too scared to or are holding yourself back.
